Storyboard Text

  • MAN V. SELF
  • I'll prove everyone wrong. I can still fish. C'mon Santiago, you got this!
  • MAN V. MAN
  • If I die in this fight, I shall die valiantly and with pride, for I would be slain by a worthy opponent!
  • MAN V. NATURE
  • Life is unfair at times, but the real prize has already been won.
  • MAN V. SELF
  • Santiago's pride is making feel like he can still fish. He hasn't a single fish in 85 days, and he must prove to everyone that he still has it in him.
  • MAN V. MAN
  • Santiago catches the great marlin, and fights a fierce battle trying to catch it. The reason this is man v man is because the marlin represents a worthy opponent of Santiago, so if either were to die, they would die with dignity knowing that they had a fair fight.
  • MAN V. NATURE
  • The sharks have taken all of Santiago's fish, proving that sometimes nature is unfair. Santiago is not angry however, since the real prize has already been: Respect. The townsfolk will see the marlin skeleton, and know that the frail old man can still fight for his life. This shows Santiago's character, for it is not your failures that define you, it is your struggle that led to those failures that do.
