The Scorpio Races BY: Maggie Stiefvater
"They run the horses on the beach, a pale road between the black water and the chalk cliffs" (pg. 1)
"I don't think often on my fathers body strung out through the reddening surf. Instead, I remember him as he was before the race: afraid. I won't make the same mistake." (pg. 4)
'All I can think of is the those massive teeth pulling my parents down into the ocean. It's not even fear thats stopping me right now. It's imagining them watching me from wherever they might be--Can they see this Beach from Heaven?" (pg. 52)

"I think, just for that moment, that I hate brothers, because they never realize when something is important to you and they only care about their own things." (pg. 21)
The setting takes place on an Island off the mainland. They have gorgeous cliffs. The island isn't really a tourist area. Its a small town where everyone knows everyone and whats happening in their personal lives or business. Its almost that time of season to racing water horses. The Island is full of them. They even think they have been there for a very long time. The setting is more pop cultural.
"I don't have any love in the world for Mutt - also known as Matthew Malvern, the bastard son of my boss - or any grooms who scurry in submissive friendship behind him, but can't leave a horse tangled up on the beach in whatever fool trap they've devised." (pg. 29)
Sean and Puck (Kate) are the two main characters. Sean witnessed his father die right in front of him. A water horse ate his father and ever sense then, his goal was to never be afraid. Now he works for Benjamin Malvern who owns the largest stable on Thisby. At the stable Sean takes care of the horses, selects good horses for people competing in The Scorpio Trials. Puck lost her parents to a water horse. She takes care of her younger brother Finn and he takes care of her also. Puck joins the race so her older brother Gabe doesn't leave them. She hopes to win the race because she needs the money to save her family home. She is no where near ready for the race and the challenges of being the first girl to compete. Sean and Puck both have best friends that are horses. They put their horse before them selves.
Puck and Sean both have different flaws. Pucks flaws are that she's rash and illogical at times throughout the story. Her mind is full of family problems. She's trying to save her family and she has to do some of it on her own. Her brother Gabe doesn't really help her and she's struggling with him planning on leaving her and Finn, her younger brother. Sean's flaws are that he doesn't know how to socialize very well with others. He had to deal with the death of his father by himself. He didn't have anyone when he was younger to talk to him about the tragedy he went through. When the games start he might not ask anyone for help cause he's kind of awkward. He didn't grow up with someone to teach him how to socialize around others.
The antogonist in the story so far is Mutt Malvern. He's jealous of Sean and does what ever he can to get him fired from his job. Mutts dad is Sean's boss.Mr. Malvern doesn't pay much attention to his son which is probably why he acts out towards Sean because Sean's better than him at riding water-horse's. Another antagonist is this story could be the boys that are in the race. They all tell Puck to quit since she's the first girl to ever join.
