Atticus, are we going to win?
After Atticus explains to Scout that he is going to be working on a case with Tom Robinson, scout asks if Atticus is going to win. Scout doesn't seem to understand why Atticus is willing to take on the case if he knows that he is going to lose.
During Tom Robinson's trial Scout envisions Atticus aiming a gun knowing it is already empty. This can be compared to Atticus taking on the Tom Robinson case while knowing he will lose. Scout learns that Atticus is helping Tom Robinson to show him and the black community that there are people who are willing to fight for their rights, even if not everyone will listen.
When Tom Robinson is declared guilty it is not a surprise to Scout because she saw it coming from the beginning. However, she is still very sad and believes that it Tom Robinson is not being treated fairly. This experience instills in her the value of standing up for the rights of those without a voice, even if the result is not what you initially hoped for.
