Old witch, fell in a ditch, picked up and penny and thought she was rich!
Lizabeth, her brother, and a few friends were bored, so they decide to bother Ms. Lottie, a grumpy old woman. They threw rocks at her and made fun of her. Afterwards, Lizabeth felt ashamed of what she did and the woman in her flinched when she though of what she did.
Late, in the middle of the night, she hears her father crying about how he can't provide for his family, and she is startled. She has never heard a man cry, and thinks that the world has lost its boundary lines. This makes her very angry.
Lizabeth rips out Ms. Lotties' flowers in anger, but then realizes that Ms. Lottie is standing in front of her. She looks at her and feels ashamed and it was that moment when childhood disappeared and womanhood began.
