The exposition occurs when Fortunado and Montresor meet at a carnival. Montresor begins to hate Fortunado because of the insults he is throwing at him.
The conflict is introduced when Montresor decides he is going to kill Fortunado. He talks about how he will be "avenged" and how "retribution overtakes its redressor."
The rising action occurs when Montresor is leading Fortunado down to the catacombs. Montresor had excused his house staff for the night, so you could tell he was planning something bad at his house. Once they make it to the small room, Fortunado is chained to the wall. Montresor has piled stones up in front of the doorway and places the last stone on.
The climax occurs when Fortunado is fully trapped in the small room. Montresor is ready to kill him so he drops the torch into the room.
The falling action occurs when Montresor puts up the last stone to seal off Fortunado so he has no escape from his death.
The resolution occurs 50 years after the killing because Montresor has lived his whole life as a free man and died without having any consequences for his actions.
