  • Nationalists vs. Communists, 1927
  • Sun Yat-sen was a leader and political idealist who helped to shape China into a republic. Yuan Shikai became the first president of the new republic, but he tried to seize more power. After his death, China split into two groups in the North and the South.
  • Long March, 1934
  • This movement was led by students in China. It was fueled predominately by the ideas of both Nationalism and Communism to unify China again.
  • Japanese Invasion, 1937
  • We will work together
  • The Nationalists and Communists took Beijing and unified China. The unity between the groups didn't last. Chiang Kai Shek, Nationalist leader, killed 1000s of communists, and Mao Zedong had to lead his followers on a march to safety.
  • Nationalists
  • We must annihilate the Communists!
  • Communists
  • The Long March was led by Mao Zedong to lead the communists to a safe place away from Shek. Once they reached the place, they were able to rebuild communists, but nearly 90% of their numbers died along the march.
  • We must find a safe place.
  • When the Japanese invade China, the Nationalists and Communists again had a common enemy, and so joined forces to fight. By the end of the war, the Nationalists had suffered heavy losses from their offensive warfare, but the Communists had gained followers and grown.
