  • Summer is juggling her schoolwork and trying to take care of her grandma and I worry that she's not going to graduate this year. (5:01)
  • Ethos
  • Summer is a senior at Black Rock High, an alternative public school for at-risk students. (1:56)
  • Now at age 19, Summer is helping support her family at home. She declined a scholarship to attend art school, but she still hopes to go. (9:25)
  • Pathos
  • If you had the choice of going to the art institute or looking after the grandma who rescued you, what would you choose? (5:07)
  • Summer Jordan missed her sophomore year of high school to care for her grandparents. (0:58)
  • Logos
  • My mom left me for drugs when I was 4, and I haven't seen her since. My dad left us when I was 7. We only had our grandma and grandpa. (0:56)
  • How: The principle represents an experienced adult who had seen a lot of kids like Summer, who've been through a lot. She is a credible source. Why: Summer has a lot on her plate and it's effecting her school work, which interferes with her future.
  • How: The fact that Summer declined her once in a lifetime scholarship to an Art Institute to stay home and work to support her family makes the audience pity her and the situation she's in. Why: Her sick grandmother and her family's situation with money is keeping her from following her dreams.
  • How: Her story shows how young she was when she lost almost everything but her grandparents. This family conflict kept her from achieving her dreams. Why: Summer had to miss out on her sophomore year to help her family and this effects her future and life in a very large way.
