Storyboard Text

  • The Fugitive Slave Law
  • The year is early 1850 and Fred, a former slave, has recently escaped the South and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts
  • Yes! I've finally made it! I will be able to live as a free man!
  • Meanwhile in Washington DC lawmakers were torn by California's entry to the union as a free state. The compromise of 1850 was created to appeal to both the North and South
  • This compromise gives both the North and South something they want
  • While the Compromise of 1850 did appeal to both sides it also divided the nation even more and the new and harsh fugitive slave law made life for former slaves and all black people much harder.
  • I don't like the South
  • I don't like the North
  • The Fugitive slave law was devastating for all the black people Fred knew. Even the people who were really free could not prove it and were sent to the South.
  • Now as a slave catcher I can bring almost any black person into slavery.
  • And now also because of this law the white people that still did oppose slavery could not act against these kidnappings or they would face fines themselves.
  • But it was not all bad. Also because of The Fugitive Slave Law opposition to slavery grew greatly in the North making way for future conflicts.
