  • At the start of the war men in the North and even the South rushed to volunteer for the armies. Although their enthusiasm didn't last long.
  • So after the battle of Shiloh, there was many soldiers that layed in the rain for more than 24 hours waiting for medical treatment.
  • The Northern and Southern woman wanted to help out so they took new responsibilities like being teachers, government workers, salesclerks, office workers.
  • In April 1862, the confederate congress passed a draft law that required men between ages 18 and 35 to serve in the army for three years.
  • "The civil war strained the Northern and the Southern economies. During the war prices rose faster than wages in the North. This inflation caused great hardship for working people. "
  • During the course of the war, prices rose 9,000 percent-compared to a rose of 80 percent in the North. These conditions affected the soldiers because of worries about their families caused many men to desert. "We are poor men and are willing to defend our country but our families [come] first.
