The story begins with Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones walking along the sidewalk carrying a large purse. A boy attempts to snatch the purse and falls to the ground. Mrs. Jones grabs him.
The main conflict of the story is the choice between what is right and what is wrong. The boy chose to do wrong and Mrs. Jones showed him what is right.
After Mrs. Jones caught the boy, she told him she was going to hang on and clean his face. She ignored his apologies as she drug him to her house. She then made him wash his face and learned his name was Roger.
After making Roger clean his face, Mrs. Jones showed trust and kindness to Roger by turning her back and preparing dinner. This gave Roger the opportunity to run with the purse but he chose to stay.
During and after dinner, Mrs. Jones explained to Roger in her own way how his attempt to steal her pocketbook was wrong. In a final act of kindness, she gave him ten dollars to buy the blue suede shoes he had wanted.
Roger was treated nice, although he did not deserve the kindness Mrs. Jones gave to him. This made an impression on him that would hopefully change his life and make him do right.
