In Chapter 2, Dill has to go back to Mississippi.
On Scout's first day of school, the teacher, Miss Caroline, criticizes Scout tor knowing how to read.
Miss Caroline finds out that Walter Cunningham has no food, nor is he going home. When Walter refuses Miss Caroline's quarter, Scout tries to explain that the Cumminghams are too poor to pay her back. Miss Caroline is "shaming" Walter by trying to force Walter to take the quarter.
Miss Caroline gets annoyed with Scout and "whips" her by tapping her hand with a ruler.
