  • Exposition
  • Conflict
  • Rising Action
  • The main character shows up to the house of usher. He was invited to the beat up mansion by usher to cleanse his soul of agitations. Usher looks sick.
  • Climax
  • We learn that Usher's sister is dying. The main character hopes to help but she passes shortly after, and usher chooses to store her body in a casket in a vault. Usher's condition become worse.
  • Falling action
  • The main character begins to hear strange sounds and occurrences throughout the mansion. He walks around trying to find out what is making them, perplexed that this begins after the sister's death. He visits usher to read out loud.
  • Resolution
  • As the anxiety reaches its climax, the main character tells usher that it may be the sister making the noises. A scream pierces through the room as we meet the unsightly horror of the risen sister.
  • As we realize that Usher had buried his sister alive, he dies of fear as she runs towards him. Usher believes that she had died once already and that he cannot bear to watch her die once more so he instead becomes a corpse. Shortly after so does his sister.
  • In the sad ending, a visualization of the house of Usher crumbling into nothing is described. We can come to believe that the house and it's inhabitants are intertwined, and mean one and the same. Everything the Ushers were, falls into nothingness.
