In the beginning of the book lennie and George are siting at the edge of the creek talking about their plans of a farm, This is one of the instances in the book where friendship is seen.
The dream or American Dream in the story is when George tells lennie about the farm they've been saving their money up for.
The broken dream aspect enters the story after Candy and George find Curly's wife dead in the barn, thus ruining their chances at living the life they wanted.
Loneliness is portrayed first by Crooks as he has been segregated by the culture and for the most part has no one else to talk to. It is latter revealed that Curly's wife is also lonely due to her making a rash decision earlier in her life.
Powerlessness is shown at the end of the story when George knows that he has to kill Lennie because if he doesn't then Curly will or he'll be tied down in a prison somewhere.
