  • "One I asked my father to find me a master who could guide me in my studies of kabbalah."
  • In Sighet at the beginning of the book, Elie was very devoted to his studies.
  • "I continued to devote myself to my studies, Talmud during the day and Kabbalah.
  • Even though people are being deported, Elie is even more devoted to his religious studies.
  • Elie has been deported to Buchenwald and his mother and sister have been killed. He and his father now pray for their lives.
  • Confidence soared. Suddenly we felt free of the previous nights terror, we gave thanks to god.
  • After all of the hardships Elie has faced in the concentration camps, he is questioning his true faith.
  • Where is god now?
  • He is hanging here on this gallows
  • What are you my god? How do you compare to this stricken mass?
  • Elie is seriously questioning his religion because of the large amount of people suffering.
  • At the dining of the book, Elie is left desensitized following the loss of his father. He feels like nothing makes sense anymore, especially religion.
  • After my father's death, nothing could touch me anymore.
