The story begins as young Goodman Brown bids his wife, Faith, farewell for his mysterious journey. Though, she wishes he would stay because she is afraid.
While walking through the forest Brown is met with the devil himself, who bears a strange resemblance to him. The devil proceeds to try and lure Brown into joining him.
Goodman Brown recognized a very pious and exemplary dame, who had taught him his catechism in youth. He realizes she has befallen to the devil and becomes horrified.
Goodman Brown is transported to the Devil's forest sacrament , and is aghast to see all the people he knew to be pious. He is completely torn apart to see his pure Faith there too.
"My Faith is gone!"
Brown is transported back to his village and goes about denouncing the so called pious peopel of his town.
"What God doth the wizard pray to?"
He became a bitter man, till the day of his death
