We learn about the narrator's little brother Doodle and his disability. Doodle can't walk and has extremely weak skin.
The conflict is that Doodle can't walk but his brother is forcing him to learn how to walk.
Doodle finds a dead Scarlet Ibis bird in the forest, and gets very sad. He has a connection to the bird and foreshadows the ending.
The narrator walks away from Doodle because he thought Doodle was following him, however, he had fallen down in the rain.
When the narrator realized he had left Doodle behind, he went back to help him.
When he returned, he found Doodle dead in the swamp, he grieved for him.
