One of the main themes of the Monsters are due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is don't assume right away. One way someone assumed in the story was when Charlie heard Tommy say that it was the alien so he shot the gun at the shadow. The shadow he shot was not an alien, it was their neighbor that went to the other street to see if the electricity was working. Other people would assume that other people were the aliens because their car turned on the lights in their house turned on. The aliens were controlling all the electricity so it made all the people turn on each other. When the loud noise happened Les Goodman checked his car and it wasn't working like everyone's but when he was walking over to the group his car started. People started assuming that he was the alien because his car started. That is one of the main themes for the Monsters are due on Maple Street.
