The U.S. wanted to stay neutral during WW2 but on December 7th, 1941 the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. All 8 battleships were put out of action, 1178 people were hurt and 2403 people died. A little over a day after the attack America declared war on Japan; and 3 days later they were at war with Germany. By the end of 1943, 10 million Americans are drafted into the military.
Men between 21 and 45 signed up for the draft. Those who were accepted, were segregated by race and African Americans were usually treated unfairly. For example the Tuskegee Airmen were the first African Americans to complete training and become pilots. They were highly educated and all scored between 95-100 on the test to become a pilot but were still made to retake the test because no one trusted them.
