Storyboard Text

  • Dramatic Irony
  • "Luchesi cannot tell Amontillado from Sherry.(84)"
  • I continued, as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation.(83)
  • Verbal Irony
  • "My friend, no; I will not impose upon your good nature.(85)"
  • Imagery
  • "...observe the white web-work which gleams from these cavern walls."
  • At the beginning of the book, Montresor told his readers that he no longer smiled at Fortunato as a friend would, but because he knew he was going to kill him.
  • Foreshadowing
  • "we will go back: Your health is precious...Drink, a draft of Médoc will defend us from the damps.(86)"
  • "I shall not die of a cough.(86)"
  • Montresor says he doesn't want Fortunato to come to taste the Amontillado, but Montresor is just playing to Fortunato's weaknesses to get him to do what he wants.
  • Imagery
  • "'The niter!' see, it increases. It hangs like moss upon the vaults. we are below the river's bed. The drops of moisture trickle among the bones.(87)"
  • Edgar Allen Poe describes the webs on the wall so the reader can imagine what the catacombs look like.
  • Tone
  • "For the love of God Montresor!(89)"
  • This foreshadows the book because Fortunato ends up being walled in a coffin with which is covered in niter. Niter may have been the reason for Fortunato's death.
  • Again on page 87, Edgar Allan Poe uses imagery to create a suspenseful scene and mood of the story. By describing the niter, he allows the reader to come up with their own picture of what the characters are going through.
  • Edgar Allen Poe uses different tone throughout the short story. In this scene, however, when Montresor is closing Fortunato in a coffin the tone is very creepy and scary.
