Being ready to greet my students at the door is an important part of the first day. The first impression we leave is often a lasting one and I want the students to feel cared for and safe in their learning environment.
Thank you for coming to visit my classroom today. Let me show you some of the things we have here to help build our community and make all our students feel at home.
On the first day the whole class goes over and establishes norms and rules to follow as a group.

Next, we all engage in a team building exercise in which we get to know a little bit about one another and work towards accomplishing a goal as a group.

Together, after establishing norms, and getting to know one another, we go over the positive incentives for the classroom, including class and individual points as well as classroom jobs.

Together, after establishing norms, and getting to know one another, we go over the procedures and consequences of the classroom.

Finally, we discuss the curriculum content for the year, what we're going to be learning about and how (Project-Based Learning) before ending class on a positive note.
