Storyboard Text

  • "Nobody is working and we got to eat."(Yezierska 20)
  • Father, We need money.
  • A man should only go to school and teach the torah.
  • "What would become of me if I remained out here."(Yezierska 129)
  • I must get away.
  • "I'm smart enough to look out for myself. It's a new life now. In America, Women don't need men to boss them." (Yezierska 137)
  • In the beginning of the story, Sara and her sisters are dependent on their parents for basic human needs like food and shelter, but when the needs arent filled the parents start to depend on their girls to help, which then forces the girls to get jobs and work for low wage. Sara hates the idea of men depending on women, especially her father, through out the book you see her struggle to really find the independence she craves.
  • "The shame that daughters heaped on me. What's an old father to heartless american children?" (Yezierska 289)
  • Sara begins to realize she doesn't want to follow her father customs and she doesn't want to depend on the father or vice versa for anything, she comes to means that in order to get away from old traditions and the feeling of being needy or being needed she must got to school and work towards her own independence.
  • "Who'll take care of me? Who'll cook my meals? Who'll wash my clothes? Who'll light me my sabbath candles?" (Yezierska 253)
  • Once Sara goes off to college in hope of becoming more independent, she realizes fathers customs were wrong all along.
  • "Aren't you glad that you didn't go to a home, or a lonely room in a boarding house?" (Yezierska 294)
  • Once Mother dies Father realizes he has no one to take care of him, and he can't look to his children because they have their own lives and will not obey his old way of living. his dependency upon his children, and women in his life is what pushes them away.
  • What am I going to do?
  • As Mother is dying, she makes Sara promise to take care of her father, Sara agrees but then realizes everything she did to get away brought her back.
  • You can live with me father.
  • Although sara fought hard to stay away from her father and his dependency, she finds herself back where she started. She comes to terms to realize this is where she is meant to be.
