"It must be understood that neither by word nor deed had I forgiven Fortunato cause to doubt my good will. I continued, as my wont, to smile in his face" (Poe, 3). In the past Fortunato had done something to Montresor that is unforgivable. Montresor appears as if he is taking it like a man and not planning revenge, but he is drawing it out. He is making sure his plan of revenge will be worth it.
"In depth about four feet, in width three, in height six or seven"(Poe, 8). For revenge Montresor plans on killing Fortunato and then hiding him underground near his wine cellar, so no one will know where he is at. He is emphasizing how he plans to put his plan in to action.

"I began vigorously to wall up the entrance of the niche" (Poe, 9). Montresor plan of revenge was get Fortunato drunk and kill him. He caught him off guard and then tied him up. After he is tied up he sealed him into the wall. But before sealing it he threw his torch in to kill him. He successfully completed going through with revenge.
