  • Exposition
  • Conflict
  • Rising Action
  • The story begins with a young native American family, Kino, Juana, and Coyotito, their baby.
  • Climax
  • The baby boy, Coyotito, was bitten by a scorpion and Kino and Juana have nothing to pay the doctor with, so Kino goes and tries to find a pearl to pay for the treatment.
  • Falling Action
  • Kino ends up finding a huge pearl, and everybody wants it, they believe that Kino doesn't deserve it but they do. Coyotito is cured but Juana and Kino still have to fight off robbers.
  • Denoument
  • Kino and Juana finally decide they must leave, so they go home to grab everything they own but when they arrive back at their house they find it to be on fire and the canoe to be destroyed.
  • Kino and his family decide to move up to the mountains to get to the capital city. Kino notices there are trackers following them so when Kino finds the trackers he attempts to kill them, he kills them but not fast enough for his baby was shot while he was trying to kill the trackers.
  • Kino and Juana return to the village with their dead baby, where everyone stares at them, but they do not say anything. Kino walks to the ocean and throws the pearl into the ocean.
