Roger tries to steal Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones' purse. Roger was unsuccessful and Mrs. Jones grabs him and doesn't let him run free.
The external conflict is that Roger tries to steal Mrs. Jones' purse, but she grabs him instead. The internal conflict is that Roger has to decide whether to stay at Mrs. Jones' house or to run away.
Mrs. Jones drags Roger to her house, where she finally released her grip on him and tells him to wash his face.
Thank you Ma'am
When Mrs. Jones lets Roger loose, he could either stay or run away. Rogers tries to decide by looking at the door, then to the sink, and then back at the door. He finally chooses to make the better decision and stay.
Mrs Jones tells Roget that she has made mistakes in her life too. Roger wants to show her that he can be trusted, so he offers to go to the store for her, but she declines. They both sit and eat at the table together.
Roger says, "Thank you Ma'am," as he's walking out, and Mrs. Jones shuts the door behind him.
