  • This was the first battle of the Civil War. Confederate forces attacked a fort still being held by the Union, winning the first battle of the war.
  • Battle of Fort Sumter April 12,1861 South Carolina
  • The battle of the Ironclads was the first naval battle of the Civil War. It was fought between the Union Monitor and Confederate Virginia. After 2 days of fighting, both sides withdrew.
  • Battle of the Ironclads March 8-9, 1862 Virginia
  • The battle of Antietam was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, with both sides' losses totaling over 30,000. This battle also ended in a draw.
  • Battle of Antietam September 17,1862 Maryland
  • General Sherman wanted to make his way to Savannah , Georgia, but General Lee of the Confederacy hired snipers to pick the Union soldiers off. This led to a victory for the Confederacy.
  • Battle of Fredericksburg December 13,1862 Virginia
  • Despite his minor setback at Fredericksburg, General Sherman made his way to Savannah. He captured the port city, cutting off the Confederacy's supplies.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea November 15- December 20,1864 Georgia
  • General Grant caught up to Lee's army at Appomatox Courthouse. Lee agreed with Grant that there had been enough bloodshed throughout the war, and surrendered, effectively ending the Civil War.
  • Surrender at Appomatox Courthouse April 19, 1865 Virginia
