  • EXPOSITION
  • CONFLICT
  • RISING ACTION
  • We are introduced to Kino, his wife, Juana, and their baby son Coyotito. They live in the seaside village of La Paz, and their village is located near a walled colonial town. Kino and his family's livelihood depend on the boat he has and pearl fishing he does. Though they are poor, Kino and his family live a happy life.
  • CLIMAX
  • Coyotito is stung by a scorpion, and the town doctor refuses to treat him. Later, when Kino goes pearl fishing, he finds a great pearl. This is something of an answer to Kino and Juana's prayers, as they wanted something that would help them save Coyotito. The pearl also opens up many dreams for Kino, and this causes him to become entranced by the pearl and the visions it brings.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • When Kino goes to the town to sell his pearl, the pearl-buyers scam him and Kino does not sell the pearl. When he gets back to his house, he is attacked by people wanting to take the pearl. This is because people now view him as an enemy and want the pearl. This is showing that bad things will now happen because of the pearl.
  • RESOLUTION
  • Juana believes the pearl is evil and tries to steal it and throw it back in the ocean. When she is doing this, Kino stops her and is mobbed by people who want the pearl. Then, Kino kills a man who attacked him. Juana and Kino had decided to leave and go to the capital to sell the pearl. When Kino goes to his boat, he finds it destroyed, and when Juana goes to their house, she finds it burning. They decide to leave then.
  • As Kino and his family are escaping, he finds out they are being looked for by trackers. Kino and Juana escape with Coyotito to a cave in a mountain. Later, Kino goes and kills the three trackers, taking one of them's rifle. A cry is heard from the cave. This is later found out to be Juana grieving over Coyotito, who had been shot earlier by one of the trackers.
  • Kino and Juana return to the village with the body of Coyotito. Kino has a rifle over his shoulder, which is something he dreamed the pearl would have given him. The pearl did give him a rifle, just not in the way he expected. Kino, now realizing the pearl is evil, throws it into the ocean. Kino and Juana's lives are now forever changed.
