  • Have you ever learned about Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders? Well if not I'll tell you about them.
  • Back in 1898 Americans had a fear that if they didn't start taking colonies they would be overpowered by other imperial powers. So after the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine the U.S. declared war on Spain. They planned to invade Cuba. A group of cavalry men made up of Western cowboys and Eastern elites join the U.S. forces to seize parts of Cuba. These men led by Theodore Roosevelt were known as the Rough Riders.
  • To help take power over Cuba away from Spain the Rough Riders along with Teddy Roosevelt and other military forces battled with the Spanish Army at San Juan Hill, Cuba.
  • The war had been going on since April when the U.S. declared war on Spain and the battle for San Juan Hill was fought on July 1, 1898.
  • The battle took place on San Juan Hill near the city of Santiago and the Americans thought if they could capture San Juan Hill then they would be able to fight off the Spanish Naval forces.
  • With an easy victory over Spain, America became and imperial power taking position of Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. The bombing of the U.S.S. Maine was most likely caused by a boiler room explosion but the government blamed it on Spain to get into a war to become a more powerful in the world. It also put Teddy Roosevelt into the spotlight, which later caused him to be able to become vice president and then president.
