Stars begin their lives by being formed in huge clouds of gas and material called nebulas
Gravity will start condensing matter and the matter will heat up. Protostars are formed.
The star starts to release energy and becomes a main sequence star on the H-R diagram
It remains in the main sequence for billions of years until all of it its fuel gets used. When that happens, the star starts peeling off on the H-R diagram and becomes a red giant
The gas and material around the star's core starts to drift away forming a planetary nebula around the remaining core
The remaining core is called a white dwarf
