Storyboard Text

  • The Tariff Abomination
  • I cannot believe that Congress has passed a tariff.
  • I know, I want to buy my nice goods from Europe and not just from New York or Chicago.
  • Congress Makes Changes
  • We, as Congress, have decided to lower the tariff!
  • I guess that is better, but I still don't completely support this whole tariff situation.
  • Nullification Act
  • We in South Carolina will not tolerate these tariffs! We are creating an act where we can cancel out any tariff you all create!!!
  • Oh no! People are putting down our tariffs. How are we going to make money for the United States?!
  • A tariff was passed which made all of the Southerners, who were mainly plantation owners and farmers, upset because they could not purchase their European goods.
  • The Force Act
  • I am here to collect your taxes because Congress made the Force Act that says that part of my job is now to collect your taxes. So pay up
  • Only in South Carolina?! I will not stand for this.
  • I hope that Andrew Jackson won't be too angry when he reads the letter I wrote him regarding South Carolina's nullification of his new act.
  • In 1832, Congress proposed a lower tariff, but the Southerners still aren't quite happy and continued to protest.
  • South Carolina Nullification
  • AH! The citizens of South Carolina have gone too far! I am furious with them!!! What can I do to stop them from rebelling?
  • South Carolina was not happy with the tariffs and proposed an act named the Nullification Act that had them decline what they considered "illegal tariffs".
  • Compromising
  • Okay, I have decided to lower the tariff significantly. Do we have a compromise?
  • Sounds like a compromise to me!
  • Sounds good!
  • Andrew Jackson had Congress pass an act that makes the military collect taxes in South Carolina. This is called the Force Act.
  • South Carolina again decided to nullify the Force Act which left Andrew Jackson boiling mad in outrage.
  • A compromise formed between Congress and South Carolina which stated that the tariff would be lowered so the Southerners would pay less. Overall, everybody ended up happy.
