The earliest memory of Jennette Walls is when she gets burned in her trailer home. When she is taken care of in the hospital, her family realizes they can't pay the bill. Her father steals her out of the hospital, then they're on the move! With this memory, she gives us a view of just how hard her life will be as she grows up
Jennette and her siblings grow up a free and adventurous life in the mining deserts of california, however her family is still struggling to support themselves.
They move to an isolated town where they move into a new home. They soon make friends and enemies.
Jennette soon finds her passion to write so she joins the school newspaper.
Things get a little hard for Jennette. She feels as if her parents aren't on her side, so she moves to New York to fulfill her dreams of journalism. She sees the pain in her fathers eyes as she leaves and realizes that her family loves her no matter what
She moves in with her sister and helps pay the rent with her minimal weekly checks.
