Immigrants in the North worked any job they could to get money, and in the North, they would work in factories.
Though they were still treated as less than the white folk, African Americans in the North were freed from slavery and able to work and live.
Labor in the South stayed on plantations, which planters would farm cash crops to sell to Europe or others in the South for money.
Life for slaves in the South was very based around slave codes they had, which said that slaves were less than their owners and had to work.
African Americans were not free in the South, which was a reason many would escape to the North for better treatment than in the South.
