  • In Stave I, Scrooge is indirectly characterized as aggressive. When a caroler walking into his office singing Christmas songs, Scrooge lashes out and throws a ruler at the boy. This shows how Scrooge is aggressive and rude."seized the ruler with such energy of action that the singer fled in terror”(624).
  • Internal Conflict
  • "I have come to bring you home, dear brother!To bring you home, home, home! Father is so much kinder! I asked him if you might come home; and he said Yes, you should; and sent me in a coach to bring you."
  • Marley's chains show his business affairs and his pursuit of wealth when he was alive. As a result of not caring about others, he is forced to wear this chain in the afterlife to remind him of his neglect of others and to encourage redemption to Scrooge.
  • Symbolism
  • "I am the Ghost of Christmas Present, Look upon me!"
  • In Stave 3 the ghost of Christmas present shows Scrooge the Cratchit's Christmas dinner and how they are thankful for what they have. One of the themes in the story is to be thankful for what you have.
  • Indirect Characterization
  • "Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer. I don't make merry myself at Christmas and I can't afford to make idle people merry.If they would rather die,they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.
  • Scrooge's internal conflict is that he regrets being rude to his nephew when he sees his beloved sister, Fannie talking to him at boarding school about coming home. He also mentions that Fannie is survived by her only son, his nephew. Scrooge is made regretful by this because he has no relationship with his nephew
  • "You're right. I'll not gainsay it, Spirit. God forbid! I shall be kinder to the only part of her left, my nephew"
  • In Stave 3, The Ghost Of Christmas Present symbolizes celebration and generosity. When the ghost sprinkled incense on the families dinners this showed the ghost enhancing meals and him giving Christmas spirit. The food he gives also shows the generosity.
  • "Tonight if you have aught to teach me, let me profit by it."
  • In Stave 1, two gentlemen approach Scrooge in his office and ask him if he'd like to donation to charity. Scrooge denies and says that poor people should rather die. This is Scrooge being Indirectly Characterized as uncharitable due to his actions.
  • "A few of us are endeavoring to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink and means of warmth. What shall I put you down for?"
