Elmira prison were confederates who survived the harsh conditions in which they were. Elmira prison was opened July of 1864.
We need to know and remember this event because a lot of men died here. This event impact the civil war because there were people who ran away and then enrolled in the war.

There were people who escaped like Berry Benson, a south Carolinian, he escaped with 10 other inmates in October 1864.
