  • Sputnik was the world's first artificial satellite and first manmade object to be placed into Earth's Orbit.
  • The Space Race came to be underway when the U.S. launched its own satellite under the direction of Wernher Von Braun. 
  • The HUAC caused more than 500 people to lose their jobs. While also accusing State Department workers of engaging in subversive activities. 
  • Thousands of federal employees were investigated, fired, or even prosecuted. 
  • Senator Joseph McCarthy, expanded this inquiry to include anyone who worked in Federal Government.
  • The first military action of the Cold War began when Soviet backed North Korean peoples army invaded its pro-western neighbor to the south.
