  • 1215 AD
  • Once you sign this you will affirm to feudal rights.
  • Nobles had enough of King Johns oppressive taxes and other abusive powers.
  • King John was forced to sign the Magna Carta. This asserted nobles had certain rights and made it clear that monarchs must obey the law. This great charter then lead to the formation of Parliament, a British council for advice.

  • We will have "due process of law" which will protect every freeman from arbitrary arrest, imprisonment, and other legal actions.
  • By 1096, thousands of knights were on their way to the Holy Land. Religious zeal motivated the Crusaders. Many Knights wanted to win wealth an land, escape their troubles, or were on a search for adventure.

  • Only the First Crusade almost achieved its goals. Christian knights captured Jerusalem in 1099. The Crusadess then continued for another 200 years. By 1187, Crusaders lost Jerusalem to Muslim leader Salah al-Din. They tried to regain Jerusalem on the Third Crusade but failed. The Crusades left religious hatred in their wake.

  • Today we will begin at 5 AM for prayers, then you will attend classes until 10 AM. Afterwards, you shall have a meal, before afternoon classes until 5 PM. Eat a lite supper then make sure to study until bedtime.
  • When economic and political conditions improved, there was a larger need for education. The Church wanted better-educated Clergy, royal rulers wanted literate men and sons of the wealthy townspeople would qualify for higher jobs.
  • The Black Death was a bubonic plague that was spread by fleas on rats. It brought terror in Europe because there was no cure.

  • Some turned to witchcraft for cures. Others experienced their guilty pleasures for they believed they'd die anyways. There were also people who believed god was punishing them and beat themselves for repentance.

  • At first, England had many victories over France because of their longbow, which could shoot three arrows in the time the French could shoot one. However, when Joan of Arc, a peasant woman, joined the French, they had many victories.
  • Between 1337 and 1453, England and France fought a series of wars known as the Hundred Years' War. Once it began, it was hard to quit because of economic rivalry and a growing sense of national pride.

  • Cathedrals were considered one of the greatest achievements of the Middle Ages. They were made of towering stone and served as a symbol of wealth and religious devotion. Romanesque churches looked like fortresses with thick walls and towers. Gothic churches had flying buttresses, which were stone supports that stood outside the church so that they could grow taller.
