Storyboard Text

  • “People hung from windows and balconies shouting a constant storm of "Heil Hitler!" and "Sieg Heil!" At last we laid eyes on the man who had put us into this wild fever of excitement. He was standing in an open black Mercedes touring car. It was the first time I had ever seen Adolf Hitler, and I will never forget the magic of that night.” Pg: 30
  • Heil Hitler!
  • Sieg Heil!
  • “On the cool, windy afternoon of April 20, 1938, Adolf Hitler’s forty-ninth birthday, I was sworn into Jungvolk, the junior branch of the Hitler Youth. When I raised three fingers of my right hand to the sky in the oath to der Führer, my left hand gripping the flag of my unit, my spine tingled.” Pg: 47

  • “We watched open-mouthed as the men jumped off trucks, fanned out in several directions, and began to smash the windows of every Jewish business in Wittlich." Pg: 60
  • “Without any hesitation, Baum climbed toward the enemy planes. As soon as they spied his little aircraft, they screamed around in a tight circle and dove to attack. There were a couple of deep, hammering cannon bursts and Baum’s unarmed plane exploded about a hundred feet above the field. Nothing remained that could be recognized as an aircraft or its pilot.”
  • "Since most of these kids are students," he observed, "we can have them ready in 48 hours, along with sixty or seventy more members from the general Hitler Youth. That will be our first unit." Then turning to me he said, "And you’re going to be in charge of it."Me, Bannführer?" I stammered. I was stunned. "Yes," he replied. "Heck, you are the new Gefolgschaftsführer of Flieger Gefolgschaft 12." He held out his hand, "Congratulations!” Pg: 195

  • “My mind ran wild with rage. Furiously, I began digging a hole; the ground was still soft from the heat of the fires. Sliding his body onto my shovel, I laid Prinz in his grave, covered him with straw, and filled the hole with dirt. I marked the spot with a piece of slate, sat down beside it, and cried until I thought my heart would break. "Oh, Prinz," I sobbed, "why didn’t I take you and Felix with me?”
