  • Today we are going to learn how to solve a two-step equation!
  • Lets start with the equation -5x-12=23
  • The first step is to draw a t-chart like you did when solving one-step equations
  • Then you will want to find the opposite of -12, which is +12. But make sure that whatever you do to one side you must do to the other. So the equation should be -5x+12=23+12 Then you simplify both sides of the eqation. So what would you have after you simplify?
  • -5x=35
  • Now you have to find the opposite (inverse oporation) of -5x. So instead of multiplying -5 by x, what are you going to do?
  • Correct! So the next step is dividing -5x by -5 because you have to isolate the variable. But remember you must do the same on the other side of the equation. So your equation should be -5x/-5=35/-5 Then you simplify!
  • The opposite of multiplying is dividing. So you would divide!
  • x = - 7
  • So class, what is the final answer?
