Storyboard Text

  • Step 1 - The Ordinary World
  • Taking care a white babies, that's what I do, along with all the cooking and the cleaning. (pg 1)
  • Step 2 - The Call To Adventure
  • "'I have an idea. Something I want to write about. But I need your help.'" (pg 118) "'I want to interview you. About what it's like to work as a maid.'" (pg 119)
  • Step 3 - Refusal of the Call
  • "'I do this with you, I might as well burn my own house down.'" "Gentle as I can say, 'No ma.am.'" (pg 120)
  • Aibileen is a black maid that has worked for families all her life. Aibileen takes care of white children and does the cooking and cleaning for families. Aibileen is a black maid that works in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960's.
  • Step 4 - Meeting with the Mentor/ Helper
  • "'What if - what if you don't like what I got to say? I mean, about white peoples.'" "'Law have mercy. I reckon I'm on do it.'" (pg 142)
  • What shakes up the situation is that Aibileen and Skeeter start talking. At first, it's because Skeeter wonders if Aibileen wants to change things and then Skeeter asks Aibileen if she will help her with her book that she wants to write. The book is about what it is like to be a black maid in the 1960's.
  • Step 5 - Crossing the Threshold
  • "'Come on in,' she whispers and quickly shuts it behind me and locks it." "'Sorry, I ain't never had a white person in my house before.'" (pg 168)
  • The refusal of the call is when Aibileen immediately says no at first. She doesn't think that it is a very good idea and she is worried about her own safety. Skeeter is disappointed at first but she understands Aibileens reasons to say no.
  • Step 6 - Tests and Enemies
  • "'You know as well as I do, there are good, tax-paying white people in this town who would fight you to the death on this. You want to let them get in our swimming pools? Let them put their hands on everything in our grocery stores?'" (pg 241)
  • Aibileen reaches within and finds courage and wisdom because she thinks about her son Treelores death. Aibileen wants to change things especially how they are treated. her son died at work and the with people did barely anything to help him.
  • The crossing of the threshold is when Skeeter and Aibileen meet for the first time. It is the first time they are goinf to do their interviews and its different for Aibileen, this is not ordinary for her and neither her or Skeeter know what to expect.
  • Aibileen and Skeeter find out who their main enemy will be, it will be Miss Hilly. Aibileen and Skeeter are worried about people finding out about the book. After Hilly finds the law book she tells Skeeter that she will not take part in any activist activities.
