  • On June 28, 1914, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian terrorist while visiting in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia. This started World War I.
  • On May 17, 1915, the Lusitania, a British ocean liner, was torpedoed off the Irish coast without warning.

  • On April 6, 1917, two weeks after German submarines had torpedoed three American ships, Congress declared war on Germany. 
  • We declare war, Germany.

  • The German military leaders began to seek an agreement to stop fighting.
  • Agreement? 
  • On January 8, 1918, before the war even ended, President Wilson outlined his plans for peace in the Fourteen Points. It would provide a framework for everlasting peace; however, many people thought that Germany should be responsible, so this plan was not widely accepted.

  • On May 7, 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed, imposing harsh punishments upon Germany.
