  • Simile
  • Personification
  • "Kids are carpets they need to be stepped on every once in a while." They are saying that kids need to be reminded who's boss and possibly roughed up.
  • Hyperbole
  • "... eyes like bright blue agent marbles." This statement is describing the child's "innocence" or what we think is innocence.
  • Onomonopia
  • "The house was full of dead bodies, it seemed.  It felt like a mechanical cemetery." They are giving the machines human qualities making them seem like they are alive.
  • Imagery
  • "They live for the nursery" The kids can not literally live for the nursery it is just saying that they send a lot of time in there.
  • "The lion roared" They are telling you the sound the lions made.
  • "And here were the lions now, fifteen feet away, so real; so feverishly and startling real that you could feel the prickling fur on your hand, and your mouth was stuffed with the dusty upholstery smell of their heated pellets...".
