But that didn't stop Alpheus. He had transformed into human form and started to chase me. I was dodging through the trees and I could hear and feel him close behind me. The stones he kicked up with his feet and the panting of his breath seemed to tug at my hair.
I knew he could outlast me and I was desperate. I needed to hide. So, I called out to the goddess, Diana and begged for help.
Diana! Help, or it's all over for me! Remember how I carried your bow and quiverful of arrows! Help, oh please, help me!
The goddess heard and was stirred. She created a dense mist and hid me. I struggled to catch my breath and my heart was beating so fast. I could hear the river god trying to find me through the mist and he didn't give up. I froze when I realized that he could see my footprints enter the fog but never leave.
A sudden sweat chilled my whole body. It streamed from me. It welled my hair. It puddled under my feet. In the time it takes me to say this, I had become a spring, a brisk stream. That's right. I was a river! But Alpheus recognized me. He returned to his true form and mingled his current with my current.
But Diana helped me once more. She split the earth open and I dived into the gorge.
*Sighs* ... I am just glad to have you back, Arethusa.
Underground I came to Ortygia. This land, which supports the name of my own beloved goddess, brought be back to the light. That is my story.
