Neuse River Festival (pg. 12)
Conversation with Gus (pg. 15)
When Noah was around the age of five, after his mother died, he began to stutter badly and began to get teased about it. He stopped talking completely. His father began to spend more time with him and taught him to read with books of poetry. This scene developed Noah's character. He began to develop his love of poetry and his appreciation for his father. This scene also influenced the underlying theme of love. The love that his father had for him led to his love of poetry.
Noah's First Time Seeing Allie (pg. 37)
It was just after graduation when Noah was introduced to Allie. When he was first introduced to her, he knew that she was the one he could spend the rest of his life with. They hung out every day after that. This scene changed Noah's character because he begins to care about someone outside of his family. He begins to become completely absorbed with Allie. This scene is where we are formally introduced to the theme of love. We see the starting stages of romance.
Walk to the Dock (pg. 50)
The first time Noah mentioned Allie to Gus, he finally figured out what Noah had been trying to forget. He told him that he was running from her ghost. He was haunted by her memory. Noah grew emotionally here. He realized that his feelings for Allie were still present in his life. The theme of love really shows through here. We see old feelings coming back up.
Kayak Ride (pg. 99)
Allie decided to come visit Noah at his house one afternoon. When she got out of her car, both of them froze. They were both in awe since they have not seen the other in fourteen years. We see more emotional development of Noah's character. We see old feelings come back up to the surface. With these new feelings, the theme of love continues to grow.
Allie and Noah took a walk out to the dock to get crabs for dinner. On this walk, Noah realized the closeness and completion he feels when he is with Allie. He begins to realize that these feelings are stronger than he thought. With this, the love he feels for Allie begins to grow and mature. This means that the theme is beginning to evolve.
The next day, Allie came back to visit Noah. Noah planned to take Allie someplace special, so he took her on a kayak ride across the river. On this trip, they began to discuss the summer they spent together. He mentioned that he remembered everything and that the entire summer was perfect. Here we see that Noah has verbally expressed his feelings for Allie. The theme has grown even more since Noah has admitted to still having feelings for Allie.
