After the kindom is split, Israel goes through a period of weak rulers and hardships. In 586 B.C., the Babylonians destory the temple built by Solomon. The temple is rebuilt but will again be destroyed by the Romans.
King Nebuchadnezzar besieges Jerusalem and a number of Israelites are captives in Babylon. King Jehoiakim eventually pays tribute to Nebuchadnezzar. Toward the end of the exile, Cyrus of Persia allows Jews into Persia.
