Lithosphere and Biosphere
Through the burning of fossil fuels, we add 9.1 billion tonnes of carbon into the air each year! The oceans, plants and land take up some of this, but about 4.1 billion tonnes remains in the atmosphere. This is one of the major causes of climate change.
On land, green plants take in carbon dioxide and create oxygen and glucose through photosynthesis Animals obtain this carbon through digestion of plants.Animals release carbon dioxide back into the air through respiration. When plants and animals die, bacteria and fungi break down the stored carbon and release carbon dioxide into the air.
At sea, phytoplankton ( tiny plant- like organisms) photosynthesise at the ocean surface. This removes carbon dioxide, allowing more carbon to dissolve into the water from the atmosphere. when phytoplankton die, they sink to the ocean floor, taking the carbon with them.
