Storyboard Text

  • President Harry S. Truman
  • During WWII, USSR and USA are both on the allied side and take down Nazi Germany. WWII ends and they both emerge as superpowers. Then, an ideological conflict, or a figurative iron curtain, emerges between the two.
  • Liberalism!
  • Dictator Joseph Stalin
  • Socialism!
  • USA:
  • We shall have the Marshal Plan and the CIA to rid of communism and to get countries on our side!
  • Expansionism and containment are policies that rise so the USA can stop the spread of communism and so countries can acquire additional territory. Both countries spread their "Sphere of Influence".
  • USSR:
  • We must keep Germany divided, they can not be unified. Soviet influence must be maintained everywhere else!
  • Deterrence is a method of the Cold War where each country builds up their capacity to fight but neither ends up fighting because of the fear of Mutually Assured Destruction.
  • OKAY WELL, I guess we'll just keep this war cold for now? Probably no nuclear war would be best?
  • WE HAVE NUKES STALIN!
  • WE HAVE NUKES TOO TRUMAN!
  • Yeah probably best, don't want to destroy the whole world.
  • President John F. Kennedy
  • Get your missiles out of Cuba you commie!
  • During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the USSR and the USA came the closest they had ever been to engaging in nuclear warfare. This is brinkmanship, an attempt to push a dangerous situation as far as possible without conceding to the opponent. In the end, they both removed the missiles.
  • Soviet Leader Nikita Khrushchev
  • Well get your missiles out of Turkey you capitalist pig!
  • Guys theres no need to fight!
  • Cuban socialist leader Fidel Castro
  • After the nuclear threat as a result of the Cuban Missile Crisis, both superpowers became afraid of mutually assured destruction and entered a period of deterrence, or a period of relatively peaceful relations where many treaties were made and the countries engaged in events.
  • Let's make a few treaties, at least get a handle on some things.
  • Haha remember when we almost blew up the world?
  • Haha yeah good times man. So listen, theres some stuff we need to talk about and fix.
  • Love it!
  • Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev
  • The end of the Cold War signified better relations between the USA and the USSR, the end of communist regimes in East Germany, the fall of the Berlin Wall or "iron curtain", and the dissolution of the USSR.
  • Well took almost a century but we did it!
  • Yay for us!
  • President Ronald Reagan
