  • Miss Abbott and Bessie Lee are escorting Jane to the red room.
  • "I resisted all the way: a new thing for me, and a circumstance which greatly strengthened the bad opinion Bessie and Miss Abbott were disposed to entertain of me." (Brontë 15)
  • "My habitual mood of humiliation, self - doubt, forlorn depression, fell damp on the embers of my decaying ire." (Brontë 19)
  • Jane is taken to the red room and reflects on the events that have gotten her in there.
  • Jane faints in fear of her Uncle Reed's presence and she eventually wakes up and finds herself in her own bedroom.
