Storyboard Text

  • Hmm...this man appears to be meditating. I wonder if he is also a Hindu?
  • Excuse me sir, but as a fellow Hindu may I join you in your meditation?
  • Om...Om...Om
  • I'm sorry but I must ask why he left Hinduism.
  • Hello my friend, I'm the Dalai Lama. I am a Buddhist, in fact I'm the incarnate of Lord Buddha. I understand the mistake as our religions are very similar as Buddha himself was raised a Hindu.
  • Wow! My name is Mahatma Gandhi, and one of the injustices I fight against in India is the mistreatment of the intouchables of the caste system. I can understand the Buddha's renouncement of it.
  • He rejected the caste system because he thought it was oppressive. He also disliked the complex rituals and worship of personal deities.
  • Well, Hindus meditate as a form of worship called Raja Yoga. Why do Buddhists meditate if not to worship?
  • We meditate to reach nirvana. It is the mental discipline aspect of the Noble Eight-fold Path that Buddhists follow to reach enlightenment.
  • We also strive for enlightenment and believe it comes from the worship of Gods as well as the practicing of good karma.
  • The Eight-fold path is the last part of the Four Noble Truths that all Buddhists must understand. We believe in dukkha, the fact that our existence is a state of suffering.  We also understand that the cause of all suffering is desire, and that extinction of dukkha comes from the Noble Path.
  • Karma is the cause and effect of our actions and inaction. Doing good deeds and having good thoughts will help us achieve moksha and liberate us from samsara, the endless cycle of birth and rebirth.
  • These are also ideas we have in common. We believe that the soul returns in flesh form after death, and that our actions and attitudes have impact on our next lives.
