The life and facts of Dred Scott
In 1795, Sam Scott was born to slave parents in Virginia. His brother died and Sam took his name, Dred.
Peter Blow was his owner, and moved with his family and slaves to Alabama, and later, Missouri.
Dred married Harriet Robinson in 1836. She was then owned by Dr. John Emerson, along with Dred. They had 2 children.
By 1846, they had moved to Illinois and the Wisconsin Territories, where there was no slavery. When his owner died, Dred tried to buy his family's freedom.
Dred Scott began a legal battle to become free because they had lived in free states. This battle went to the Supreme Court in 1857.
Dred Scott died after 1 year of freedom, but the Constitution of the United States was changed with the 13th and 14th Amendments to free all slaves.
