Storyboard Text

  • We are now an independent nation because of the Declaration of Independence however, under the Articles of Confederation we lack a strong central government.
  • Yes, did you hear that were planning on drafting a Constitution? Theres gonna be a Constitutional Convention soon.
  • Guys, what about a Great Compromise which gives equal and proportional representation to all states!
  • No, what about states like New Jersey, representation based on population isn't fair to us small states. The New Jersey Plan is more suitable.
  • The Virginia Plan gives larger states more votes which is only fair right?
  • Well, as a southern state representative I think the entire slave population should count towards our representation.
  • Slavery is a huge part of the southern states so what should we do about the slave population?
  • Thats not fair to the Northern states, I propose the Three-Fifths Compromise which gives representation to 3/5 of the entire slave population in the southern states.
  • How can we assure that the national government doesn't have too much power?
  • We could delegate responsibilities so that theres a separation of powers among many different groups and not just one person has all the power.
  • Oh yeah, we could also provide a Checks and Balance system in which all the branches can check on each other.
  • Well, what branches should we include in the Constitution anyway?
  • We could have a Legislative Branch, which would make laws, an Executive Branch which would enforce the laws and a Judicial Branch which would interpret the laws.
  • As a Federalist, I support the ratification of the Constitution just the way it is.
  • As an Anti-federalist I believe the Bill of Rights should be added in order to establish all rights.
  • The ratification of the Constitution will only happen if we include the new Bill of Rights.
