In 1889 the army had overthrown the Brazilian monarchy and established a republic.
The new leaders were chiefly controlled by landed elites, who had become wealthy from large coffee plantations.
When the Great Depression hit, it devastated the coffee industry, weakening the landed elites control in the process.
The Brazilian people made Getúlio Vargas president, later making himself dictator.
Vargas made major changes, changing it to a 8-hour work day with minimum wage. He constructed a New State, making civil rights were restricted, and political parties were outlawed.
Finally after a 15 year term, Vargas was forced to resign as dictator.
